In the future there will be televison

when I think of my future,
there is not much fear.

when I was young I
was afraid of what
would become of me.

not knowing if I would
sleep alone in my bed
or if there would be children
but not much of a paycheck.

would I fail,
squander potential,
go
mad in an empty room?

would I become my father?

when I was young I was afraid.

but now I am in the future of
my younger self.

alone.
no wife, no children.
no status.

I am unable to afford
a dentist
a doctor
let alone
flowers, chocolates or
rings.

I watch television shows
about the universe and physics,
meth cooks and
policewomen.

my dog curls by my side
every night, as
I go to sleep at 4am.

there are far worse,
fates.

I no longer
fear the future.

besides,
I am confident
the bombs will never go off
the world will not end
and
there will be television in the future.

  9. "there will be television in the future." what an optimist. As a kid the future is frightening because you have not lived very long and you are in an ever changing part of your life. You are growing, lossing baby teeth, and learning so many new things. When we are older we have experienced more and though the world is no less frightening, we deal with it better

  12. Wow... just wow. I don't know if this inspires confidence or if it's horribly depressing, but it is certainly moving.

So...you watch "Breaking Bad"? I was trying to figure out if there was another show on TV about meth cooks, but I can't think of any. =)
As usual, I really like your voice in this. You do a great job of describing the awkward transition to adulthood I went through myself and I love the idea of finding solace in the knowledge that there will always be television - it's a ridiculous idea on the surface, but there is definitely comfort in the constant.
    Very cool.

Seems like a dystopian future to me (then again I didn't grow up with television and I broke my antenna in 2001 vowing never to return). Potent and thought provoking. Thank you.

Read it twice so to be sure not to miss anything. Loved the pace of it and imagery of you and your concerns.

  17. I really liked this. I love the line "now I'm in the future of my younger self". Each line gave me something to think about. Well done. (p.s., love the photo of the old, console t.v.) laurie @ Battling My Inner Critic

very cool piece - I couldn't help but take away a sardonic critique of the role of mass media in the lives of people today...

true angels have no money if that can help, as for TV , who wish for "the anesthetic of the masses"
